Instructions to Authors

Brazilian Journal of Periodontology aims to provide a platform for the exchange of high-level scientific and clinical progress in the field of Periodontology.

GENERAL GUIDELINES

Articles submitted to the Brazilian Journal of Periodontology (BJP) should not have been previously published.

All new manuscripts should be submitted through the BJP`s online submission and review site: https://submit.dentalpress.com.br/index.php/BJP. Authors who do not yet have an account on the site should click on "Create account" and then follow the steps to open an account. All accounts must be linked to the author`s ORCID (to create your ORCID account, visit the site: https://orcid.org/).

All articles must be submitted in English. After the approval of the article, a version in Portuguese should be provided. This version should be prepared by a translator with experience in translating scientific articles and expertise in the specific terminology of the field of Periodontology. Under no circumstances should automatic translation tools be used.

If the author needs assistance in translating the text into Portuguese, they can contact us via email at editora4@dentalpress.com.br.

Negotiations, quotes, and payments related to the translation of the manuscript are the sole responsibility of the authors.

Original Research Articles will receive priority in the evaluation for publication, but Reviews and Case Reports in Periodontology may also be included. BJP reserves all copyrights of published manuscripts. The information contained in the originals and published in the journal will be the responsibility of the author(s) and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the Editorial Board or the position of SOBRAPI (Brazilian Society of Periodontology and Implantology).

The online submission system of BJP provides a step-by-step guide to the submission process of your article and file upload. The system converts your files into a single PDF, which is used in the peer-review process. Editable files are requested to facilitate the formatting of your article for final publication. In addition, we have a dedicated section in each issue, as follows:


Articles containing relevant epidemiological information for developing or underdeveloped countries: This initiative aims to bring essential peculiarities of pathologies and occurrences in countries outside of North America and Europe to light.

Studies with negative results: This section aims to address the publication bias issue, which tends to publish more studies with positive results. This is a concern when conducting systematic reviews and applying evidence-based Dentistry.

Innovation: In this section, the innovation body of SOBRAPE will invite experts to discuss innovations in the field of Periodontology.

Editorial Policies

Plagiarism and Originality

Works containing plagiarism will not be accepted for publication in the Brazilian Journal of Periodontology, and if plagiarism is detected, the manuscript will be rejected.

Manuscripts will be reviewed by the editor and consultants, and are subject to editorial revisions.

Peer Review Process

All submitted manuscripts will be forwarded to an associate editor for initial analysis. If it is decided that the manuscript is not suitable for the scope of the journal, it will be returned to the author(s) in a final editorial decision. If the editor determines that the manuscript is suitable for publication, it will undergo the review process, being evaluated by a group of two to three reviewers, using the "double-blind" system.

Required Declarations

After the article is approved, authors will be asked to provide the following declarations:

• Copyright Transfer: transferring the copyright of the manuscript to Dental Press, in case the work is published.

• Conflict of Interest: if there is any kind of authorial interest related to the research object of the work, it must be disclosed.

• Protection of Human and Animal Rights: if applicable, compliance with the recommendations of international protection organizations and the Helsinki Declaration must be reported, adhering to the ethical standards of the committees responsible for human/animal experimentation.

• Permission for Use of Copyrighted Images: illustrations or tables (original or modified) taken from copyrighted material must be accompanied by permission for use from the owners of these rights and the original author (and the caption must correctly credit the source).

• Source of Funding: the author should inform about the provider of financial support for the research and/or preparation of the article, and briefly describe the sponsor`s role, if any, in the study design, data collection, analysis and interpretation; report writing; and the decision to submit the article for publication. If the sponsor did not have such involvement, this should be stated.

• Ethics Committees: articles should reference, if applicable, the approval of the Ethics Committee of the institution without, however, specifying the name of the university, center, or department (thus, this information will not be available to reviewers).

An email will be sent to the corresponding author confirming the acceptance of the manuscript, along with the necessary documentation.


Summary/Abstract

The manuscript should contain a concise and factual summary. The summary/abstract should briefly communicate the purpose of the research, the main results, and the conclusion.

Abstracts should contain a maximum of 250 words and be structured in the following sections: Objective, Materials and Methods, Results, Conclusions.

Abstracts should be accompanied by 3 to 6 keywords, also in Portuguese and English, appropriate according to the guidelines of DeCS (http://decs.bvs.br/) and MeSH (www.nlm.nih.gov/mesh).

Text

Research Articles (Originals and Reviews)

It should contain the essential elements for understanding the manuscript and should be divided into well-defined and clear sections: Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, Discussion, and Conclusion; captions for images and tables, if applicable. Maximum of 4,000 words, not including references, abstract, captions for graphs, figures, and tables.

Case Reports

Clinical case reports will be considered for publication if they describe an unusual case presentation, complex diagnosis, and new approach or treatment innovations. Authors should discuss clinical challenges; describe the treatment method, and discuss the outcome in light of previously published patient treatment methods.

Letters to the Editor Letters should address issues relevant to members of the Brazilian Society of Periodontology or offer constructive criticism of articles published by the Brazilian Journal of Periodontology. Letters should be concise and signed. If the letter comments on already published articles, it should include the proper reference. The letter should be directed to the authors of the original work, so they have the opportunity to respond.

Editorials

These should be requested by the journal editors to provide a unique perspective on published articles or to comment on other items of interest to readers.

Innovations

It should contain a brief summary (maximum 150 words), keywords, background, questions raised by the Innovation Board, and answers provided by the invited author, final considerations, and references if applicable. A maximum of 2,000 words is allowed, excluding the abstract and references.

Figures and Tables

The manuscript should contain a maximum of six figures and tables. Multi-panel figures are accepted. They should be of high quality (300dpi) and in JPG format. Figures should be submitted in separate files.

Figure Captions: All figures must have captions. Captions should include a brief title and a description of the figure. Figure captions should be concise but should include the necessary explanation of all symbols and abbreviations used. All figures must be cited in the text.

Tables: Tables can be placed near the relevant part of the article text or on a separate page at the end of the text. Tables should be numbered according to their mention in the text, and any explanatory notes should be included below the table. Tables should be used sparingly, and the presented data should not duplicate information in the text.

Always use Arabic numerals to refer to tables and figures.


Clinical Relevance

The aim of this section is to provide clinicians with a guide for reading, putting current research into perspective. The text should not exceed 100 words. It should provide a clear and concise explanation of the study`s fundamentals, what was known before, and how the present result advances knowledge in the field. If appropriate, it should contain suggestions for clinical practice.

It should be divided into:

• Scientific Fundamentals of the Study.

• Key Findings.

• Practical Implications.

Important: This text will be published in a highlighted box alongside your manuscript. This section should leave clinicians wanting to learn more about the topic and encourage them to read the full article.


References

Bibliographic references should not exceed 30 and should be listed after the end of the text, in the same order as mentioned, following the Vancouver style: http://www.nlm.nih.gov/bsd/uniform_requirements.html. When applicable, they should include: author(s) name(s), journal/book title, article/chapter title, year of publication, volume/chapter of the book, and article number or pagination.

Title Page

Article title, names of authors, and affiliations. Please clearly indicate the first and last names of all authors. Below the names, add the authors` affiliations (where the manuscript was produced), below the names. Indicate all affiliations with superscript numbers after the author`s name and in front of the appropriate affiliation. Provide the full correspondence address, including the country and, if applicable, the email address of all authors.

Corresponding Author: It should be clearly indicated who will be the author responsible for all stages mentioned, from publication to post-publication. Ensure that a valid email address is provided and that other contact information is up to date.


Supplementary Material

Supplementary materials can be published with your article to enhance it. Submitted supplementary items will be published exactly as they are received. Please submit the supplementary material along with your article and provide a concise and descriptive caption for each supplementary file.


Clinical Trials

The Brazilian Journal of Periodontology encourages the principal investigator to register the manuscript in Clinical Trial Studies (www.clinicaltrials.gov). The registration number and registration date can be included in the Materials and Methods section.

Randomized clinical trials should follow the CONSORT guidelines: http://www.consort-statement.org/


Final Proof Approval

To ensure a swift publication of the articles, we kindly request the author to provide corrections to the final proof within two days. Corresponding authors will receive an email with the proof in PDF format, allowing annotations and corrections on the file. Our team will do their best to publish your article promptly and accurately. Please use the proof to check for typing, editing, completeness, and accuracy of the text, tables, and figures. It is important to ensure that all corrections are sent to us in a single email. Please carefully check for any errors and list all corrections to be made before replying to us, as we cannot guarantee the availability of subsequent corrections. The proof review is the responsibility of the author.
